The first evidence of how vitamin D deficiency and genetics interact to increase the risk of multiple sclerosis has been reported by researchers.
It suggests that vitamin D supplements taken during pregnancy and early in life could prevent the disease.
This is exciting news. Just think about the elimination of MS - multiple sclerosis. An autoimmune disease, MS is rare in the tropics - which led originally to the theory that an infectious disease found only in the temperate climates was responsible for the disease. Instead, it's the sunshine - and the body's opportunity to synthesize Vitamin D that seems to be the key factor.
It should not be an heroic effort to have women consume Vitamin D capsules before, during and after their pregnancies - to assure that their offspring are protected by this vitamin's capacity to prevent MS.
